Creating a song with the kids

We've been doing it for a while...singing.
(only sometimes in the bath, not that these pictures reflect that!)
This photo is from April 2009 (Aged 3 & 1)
Creating your own song is really more simple than some folks may think.
The inspiration comes from the subject the children are

currently interested in or are talking about.

Mr Turtle June 2007 (Age 1)
Tonight, in the bath, it was mermaids.
Well, they were holding their breath under water and
wondered if any people could hold theirs for hours?
"Well, no, but perhaps free-divers were the longest", I said.
Then I remembered the 'real mermaid' I had heard about
and the words of the song flowed from there.

The tune is so much easier - if you use one from a song you already know.

To the tune of: "Polly put the kettle on"
Mermaids live in the ocean,
Mermaids live in the ocean,
Mermaids live in the ocean,
And eat Sea-weed.

No, they eat cockles & shells,
No, they eat cockles & shells,
No, they eat cockles & shells,
And throw the shells away.

Mermaids live in the ocean,
Mermaids live in the ocean,
Mermaids live in the ocean,
They’re the spirits of the sea.

Then after singing this a few times, the boys just took it away,
changing some words at first, then whole lines,
and eventually got carried away.
In this house, this is when the giggles start, silliness appears
and the happiest memories are created!
